If you want to write great stories that will have an impact – then you should learn how to think like a journalist.
NOBODY BUYS A SLOGAN – EVERYBODY BUYS A STORY
1 ) Learn how to find a great story
A journalist who’s great at finding stories is worth much more than a journalist with a sharp pencil. Learn to value news and learn to recognize the stories in it.
2) Expand your network
Make bookings in your calendar when you should call important people, and just say hi to them. You will get far by just talking about the weather. It keeps you updated on what’s happening.
3) Simplify your message
Simplify, simplify, and simplify! Read it loud to your children. If they don’t understand – rewrite!
4) Learn to hate corporate bullshit
No one is interested in knowing that your company is the ”hottest”, ”best” or ”greatest” business ever. No one! Whenever you see Corporate Bullshit – delete immediately and throw in the trash.
5) Nobody buys a slogan – everybody buys a story
It’s quite simple – nobody buys a Mad Men slogan anymore. Everyone know that it is a fictional slogan who’s job is to sell you stuff that you don’t want! Your job is to tell interesting stories – it’s not to sell products or services.
